Why Your Google Profile Matters More Than Your Website in 2026
Oct 24, 2026 · By Rosa GJ · 6 min read
Most new clients will judge your practice on Google before they ever see your website. For a dental clinic, a vet or a law firm, the first impression now happens in a small box on Google Search and Maps: your name, your star rating, a handful of photos and a button to call.
That box is your Google Business Profile. Many practice owners set it up once, years ago, and never touched it again. Meanwhile they invest thousands in a beautiful website that a large share of potential clients never reach.
This article explains why your Google profile has become your real front door, and what you can do this week to make it work harder for you.
How clients actually find a local practice
Today the decision is made on the results page, not on your homepage. Think about how someone finds a new dentist after moving to a new neighbourhood, or a vet when their dog is unwell on a Saturday morning:
1They search “dentist near me” or “vet Eixample” on their phone.
2Google shows a map with three highlighted businesses, each with stars, a review count and opening hours.
3They compare those three in seconds, tap on photos, read a couple of recent reviews.
4They call, request directions or book, often without ever opening a website.
Reviews sit at the centre of that process. BrightLocal’s 2026 survey found that 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses, and the share who always read them jumped from 29% in 2025 to 41% in 2026 (BrightLocal, PinMeTo summary).
The bar is also rising. In the same survey, 31% of people said they will only use a business rated 4.5 stars or higher, up from 17% a year earlier. The survey covers US adults, but the behaviour is the same in Barcelona, London or anywhere people carry a smartphone.
What your Google profile does that your website can’t
Your website waits to be found; your Google profile goes out and gets found. That is the key difference, and it explains why a neglected profile costs more than an outdated website.
A well-kept profile does several things a website simply cannot:
It appears at the exact moment of need. When someone searches for a service near them, the map results show up above most websites.
It carries social proof by default. Your star rating and review count sit right next to your name, before anyone has clicked.
It turns a search into an action in one tap. Call, get directions, book or send a message, all from the results page.
It answers practical questions instantly. Opening hours, holiday hours, parking, accessibility and languages spoken are visible without searching your menu pages.
It feeds AI search. BrightLocal’s survey shows AI search tools are now the third most used source of local recommendations, behind Google and Facebook. These tools draw on the same public information: your listing, your reviews, your consistency across the web.
None of this means your website is useless. It means the website is now the second step, and many clients will only take that step if the first one convinces them.
Reviews are the new word of mouth
A steady flow of recent, answered reviews now does the job that personal recommendations used to do. According to BrightLocal, 85% of people are more likely to use a business after reading positive reviews, while 77% are put off by negative ones.
Two details matter more than most owners realise:
Recency. A clinic with 200 reviews, the last one from 2023, looks less active than one with 60 reviews and three from this month. People increasingly expect fresh feedback.
Responses. How you answer tells future clients how you treat people. Generic, copy-paste replies are noticed and disliked.
For professional practices, a few rules make responding easier:
1Thank every positive reviewer by name and mention something specific about their visit.
2Answer negative reviews calmly, within a day or two, and offer to continue the conversation privately.
3Never confirm private details. A dentist, vet or lawyer must protect confidentiality, so keep replies general (“we’d like to understand what happened”) rather than discussing the case.
4Ask for reviews as part of your normal process, for example with a short message after the appointment, instead of in occasional bursts.
Five things to fix on your profile this week
Most profiles can be improved in an afternoon, without any technical knowledge. Start here:
1Check your basic information. Name, address, phone number and website must match exactly what appears on your site and on directories. Inconsistent details confuse both Google and clients.
2Choose the right categories. Your primary category (for example “Dental clinic”, “Veterinarian” or “Immigration attorney”) has a big influence on which searches you appear in. Add secondary categories for your main services.
3Update hours, including holidays. Nothing loses trust faster than a client arriving at a closed door that Google said was open.
4Add real, recent photos. Show your team, your reception, your treatment rooms and your entrance from the street. Real photos build confidence that stock images never will.
5Reply to every review from the last six months. Then set up a simple routine to ask happy clients for a review after each visit.
Once the basics are in place, add your services with short descriptions, answer common questions, and post an update every few weeks. An active profile tells Google, and clients, that you are open for business.
Where your website still matters
Your profile wins the first click; your website wins the decision. Once someone is interested, especially for higher-value services like implants, surgery or a legal case, they want to know more before they commit.
That is where a good website earns its place. It explains your services in depth, introduces the people behind the practice, shows prices or packages where appropriate, and makes booking or getting in touch effortless.
The two work best as a team:
Your Google profile links to a website that loads fast on mobile and continues the same story.
Your website shows your Google rating and recent reviews, reinforcing the trust that brought the visitor there.
Both make it easy to take the next step, whether that is a call, a booking or a WhatsApp message answered quickly, even outside office hours.
Think of it this way: the profile is your shop window on the busiest street in town, and the website is the consultation room. You need both, but most clients will only walk in if the window looks right.
